Aug 3: Evolver Intensive Teleseminar - with Alex Grey, Larry Harvey, Erik Davis, Antero Alli and Jen Zariat

by zariat.

Please join me for the Evolver Intensive teleseminar, “Forging Community Through Visionary Art: How You Can Awaken Your Spirit and Your Connection To Others.” I’ll be taking part in a week of discussions hosted by the acclaimed author and culture critic, Erik Davis. In addition to my call, featured guests will include visionary painter Alex Grey, ritualist and filmmaker Antero Alli, and the legendary Larry Harvey, founder of annual Burning Man festival.

Topics and Concepts:

How does visionary art help us create community? How can you express your creative truths and engage with visionary art to help evolve the world forward? Art and performance can not only inspire and delight — they can transform your life. Infused by the thrum and expanse of primal myths and rituals, a few powerful creators are reviving the deep power of creativity — opening eyes to the possible, reforging community in a society driven into pockets of isolation. These calls will offer practical steps you can take today – on the personal, local and planetary levels – that you can integrate into your life so you can make a difference in our world. Not only will you participate in these calls, you’ll have the chance to ask the questions that most challenge you. To learn more, just go to http://www.EvolverIntensives.com/VisionaryArt.

For detailed participant bios and outlines of the upcoming discussions, register at the page above or visit http://www.evolverintensives.com/VisionaryArt/register.htm.

About My Discussion:

AUGUST 3: HOLO-GREENING YOUR EVENTS AND YOUR LIFE
with JEN ZARIAT
JEN ZARIAT
What does it really mean to be Green?

Jen Zariat, one of the world’s leading experts on full-spectrum green consciousness and action, walks us through the mindset and planning that goes into making an event seriously “Green.” With her background in planning large events and festivals, Jen will demonstrate how to undertake a holistic approach, starting from the initial visioning, through how space is properly used, materials are procured, energy is supplied, people are moved, volunteers are chosen and mentored. Discover how art and entertainment can be vehicles of transformation, not only in their over messaging, but through the way they are constructed, and when they are finished, whether we do or do not leave our trace. On this call, Jen will open your eyes to new shades of green — both in your mind and in your world.

On this call, Jen will explore with you…

  • How to shape elements of an event to encourage guests to grow into genuine Participants — and ‘take co-ownership’ in the community experience
  • How to craft rituals, body language and avenues of communication to include rather than exclude others
  • Secrets of how to consciously create new opportunities to engage others in creative community projects
  • What visionary art adds to the aesthetic of a tribal or community event that transform the overall experience

Jen Zariat, co-founder of Symbiosis Events and EcoGatherings, is an event producer and new media specialist with over 10 years of global experience. She has worked on the production crew of events from Rainbow Serpent (Australia) to Soulclipse (Turkey) to Boom Festival (Portugal), and many in her local California. She also contributes as a guest speaker and panelist on topics of community building and ‘conscious’ event production. Her continuing goal is to integrate the insights from these experiences into meaningful innovations.

Drinks With the Old School, Literally.

Last night i went to the kickoff party for the San Francisco branch of the Choate Rosemary Hall Alumni Club. I attended Choate, and happily still keep in touch with many of my friends from there. One of my former roommates even came out for the first Symbiosis Gathering in 2005. She just gave birth to a beautiful son last summer. I also had dinner with an ex-boyfriend recently in Seattle, who can be credited with teaching me much of what I first learned about computers. He works for Microsoft now. So, based on these and other positive experiences, I was excited to meet up with some of my other former classmates and see what they’re doing these days.

Unfortunately, nobody I know (or knew) was in attendance.

I did have some fascinating chats with the staff and faculty present, which were the only interactions that saved me from an evening as a complete wallflower. Give thanks for obligatory courtesies. This is how I found out that the founders of American Apparel (Dov Charney) and Flickr (Caterina Fake) are amongst our notable west coast alumni. As I was inadvertently quoted on Twitter, thinking about this just makes me want to do something worthy of my own Wikipedia page. (Still working on that.)

wikiquote

As a gesture of thanks for their genuine candidness and hospitality, and also as a self-serving desire to have a bit more fun at the next one of these, I offered my services to help with coordination and publicity of events in the future. Given this is an area of my professional expertise, and that I’m friends with a couple hundred alumni on Facebook, I think I’ll really be able to help.

Ironically, this is just like my days back at Choate. I was consistently overextended in my extracurricular activities. It’s actually where I got my start organizing parties (thanks, Class Committee) and making flyers.

Perhaps this will be an ironic opportunity to bring my entire career full circle…

Just for fun - This is me at Choate. 3rd form year.

Fresh Emolectro Remixes at RCRDLBL.com

Jun 23rd, 2009

I have a confession to make: A lot of my music sounds a lot like disco these days. And 80’s pop. With lots of synth. I really like it… and I never thought I’d say that. I’ve always had a passion for well-crafted lyrics, so it’s no surprise that certain indie rock ballads have crept into my playlists… It’s just the glam-rock, power-bass stuff that’s surprising me. Where the ballads and the basslines meet, we have what i’m calling Emolectro. Lately i’ve been obsessing over finding these sorts of tracks, in all their lazer-loaded breaks and techno glory.

iTunes has been useful in my quests, with a surprising score of The Glitch Mob’s remix of Red Dress by TV on the Radio, and lots of goodies from my newest crush: Bat for Lashes. The most consistent new source for soothing my remix cravings, however, is RCRDLBL.com. Repeated searches for particular artists kept bringing me back to this site. Then i discovered the RSS feed. Game Over.

Here are a few of the gems i uncovered:

  • Trentemøller : Vamp (Live Edit) - This track swings and shimmies with a groovy lounge feel, but heavily loaded with deep layered rhythms from the Danish master.
  • Miike Snow - Almost everything i find from Miike Snow, i like. This is an outstanding selection of tracks, including remixes of Vampire Weekend and Passion Pit. Burial (Benny Blanco Remix Feat. Neon Hitch) gets stuck in the head with vague and haunting lyrical melodies.
  • Kid Cudi : Day and Night (Crookers Remix) - The local dubsteppers have had the original version of this track in heavy rotation, and the hook is so catchy it often follows me home. This version is a stepped-up electrified house mix that i may like even better.

So did i mention you should just subscribe to the RCRDLBL RSS feed already? Then you can have this kind of stuff delivered to you hot and fresh. Seriously, do this now.

Symbiosis Gathering Named One of 10 Festivals “Serious About Being Green”

I just found out that E ‘The Environmental’ Magazine has named Symbiosis Gathering, with support from EcoGatherings, as one of 10 Festivals Serious About Being Green. As a co-founder of both these organizations, I am honored on behalf of everyone involved to be recognized for our efforts.

From E Magazine, by Rebecca Benson:

Symbiosis Gathering’s goal is to “create an experience that is transformative and inspiring, based in a deep respect for our community and environment.” It’s not only a music festival but an art and wellness festival as well. Working with EcoGatherings, a green event organizer, Symbiosis has been able to stay environmentally friendly by reducing waste and integrating environmental education into all their events. They have a “leave no trace” visitor policy and recycling and public transportation systems set up. Even their promotions use non-toxic ink and tree-free or recycled paper.

Check out the other 9 festivals mentioned too. It’s great to see eco-logical practices become standards in large scale event production.

Our production crew, Symbiosis Events, produced a stage for the third year in a row at the HowWeird Street Faire in San Francisco. I was there snapping photos during the fantastic beats thumping all sunny Sunday from our not-so-little area of the annual bash. Here’s some of what i captured:

Custom DIY Link Shortening for Your Networks

May 17th, 2009
by zariat.

If you maintain a lot of social networks, like many artists and musicans, it’s often difficult for people to find all your different profiles without you sending them direct (and often long) links. Today i got an email from my friend deepchild, a musician and avid internet user, with a brilliant new way to simplify everything.
Check out his new email signature:

www.deepchild.com/twitter
www.deepchild.com/flickr
www.deepchild.com/youtube
www.deepchild.com/myspace
www.deepchild.com/facebook

So short, so sweet! It’s also a simple technical procedure. If your hosting provider doesn’t offer a way to do an automatic redirect, you can do it yourself by editing a text file with only one line of code. Here’s the step by step process:

  1. Open a simple text editor (like TextEdit for Mac users), NOT Pages or Word.
  2. Paste the following line of code into a new document:
    <?php header("Location: http://YOUR-URL.COM/"); ?>
  3. Change YOUR-URL.COM to the URL of your desired location, such as your Twitter or Facebook profile.
  4. Save the file as index.php.
  5. Upload the file using FTP to a new directory on your website, with a name that corresponds to the location of the link.
    Example: deepchild.com/twitter/

Repeat for each network! Now you can send people a clean and simple list of links to all your networks at once. They will also be able to remember them easily for future reference.

If you’d like to hear more from deepchild, you can follow along with his adventures on tour in Europe right now at www.deepchild.com, or check out his currently featured podcast at Electronic Groove:
