Unfortunately, nobody I know (or knew) was in attendance.

I did have some fascinating chats with the staff and faculty present, which were the only interactions that saved me from an evening as a complete wallflower. Give thanks for obligatory courtesies. This is how I found out that the founders of American Apparel (Dov Charney) and Flickr (Caterina Fake) are amongst our notable west coast alumni. As I was inadvertently quoted on Twitter, thinking about this just makes me want to do something worthy of my own Wikipedia page. (Still working on that.)

As a gesture of thanks for their genuine candidness and hospitality, and also as a self-serving desire to have a bit more fun at the next one of these, I offered my services to help with coordination and publicity of events in the future. Given this is an area of my professional expertise, and that I’m friends with a couple hundred alumni on Facebook, I think I’ll really be able to help.

Ironically, this is just like my days back at Choate. I was consistently overextended in my extracurricular activities. It’s actually where I got my start organizing parties (thanks, Class Committee) and making flyers.

Perhaps this will be an ironic opportunity to bring my entire career full circle…

iTunes has been useful in my quests, with a surprising score of The Glitch Mob’s remix of Red Dress by TV on the Radio, and lots of goodies from my newest crush: Bat for Lashes. The most consistent new source for soothing my remix cravings, however, is RCRDLBL.com. Repeated searches for particular artists kept bringing me back to this site. Then i discovered the RSS feed. Game Over.

Here are a few of the gems i uncovered:

• Trentemøller : Vamp (Live Edit) - This track swings and shimmies with a groovy lounge feel, but heavily loaded with deep layered rhythms from the Danish master.
  
• Miike Snow - Almost everything i find from Miike Snow, i like. This is an outstanding selection of tracks, including remixes of Vampire Weekend and Passion Pit. Burial (Benny Blanco Remix Feat. Neon Hitch) gets stuck in the head with vague and haunting lyrical melodies.
• Kid Cudi : Day and Night (Crookers Remix) - The local dubsteppers have had the original version of this track in heavy rotation, and the hook is so catchy it often follows me home. This version is a stepped-up electrified house mix that i may like even better.

So did i mention you should just subscribe to the RCRDLBL RSS feed already? Then you can have this kind of stuff delivered to you hot and fresh. Seriously, do this now.

Symbiosis Gathering’s goal is to “create an experience that is transformative and inspiring, based in a deep respect for our community and environment.” It’s not only a music festival but an art and wellness festival as well. Working with EcoGatherings, a green event organizer, Symbiosis has been able to stay environmentally friendly by reducing waste and integrating environmental education into all their events. They have a “leave no trace” visitor policy and recycling and public transportation systems set up. Even their promotions use non-toxic ink and tree-free or recycled paper.

Check out the other 9 festivals mentioned too. It’s great to see eco-logical practices become standards in large scale event production.

RockIt Science 4 Year Anniversary . 16 May 2009

The next weekend was the RockIt Science 4 Year Anniversary bash, an all night raging dance party at The Endup with DJ Fame, Eric Sharp, Native Intelligence, and several more in a lineup that went for 14 hours! I was the MC for the evening, as well as an impromptu photographer:

So short, so sweet! It’s also a simple technical procedure. If your hosting provider doesn’t offer a way to do an automatic redirect, you can do it yourself by editing a text file with only one line of code. Here’s the step by step process:

1. Open a simple text editor (like TextEdit for Mac users), NOT Pages or Word.
2. Paste the following line of code into a new document:

   <?php header("Location: http://YOUR-URL.COM/"); ?>

3. Change YOUR-URL.COM to the URL of your desired location, such as your Twitter or Facebook profile.
4. Save the file as index.php.
5. Upload the file using FTP to a new directory on your website, with a name that corresponds to the location of the link.
   Example: deepchild.com/twitter/

Repeat for each network! Now you can send people a clean and simple list of links to all your networks at once. They will also be able to remember them easily for future reference.
